The official Quantico season 3 premiere ratings are in over at ABC, but unfortunately, we can’t say that it spells a whole lot of optimism for the show’s future.
The first episode of the Priyanka Chopra series ended up drawing a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic. That is a drop of almost 48% in the demo from the season 2 premiere and it also ties the lowest rating in the demo that we’ve seen to date.
Is there a big reason for the show’s ratings decline? Sure. It just comes down to it being off the air for sure long. Sure, there was competition in the form of playoff sports and also the NFL Draft, but the point here is that there is always going to be competition on the air. That’s just something that a show like Quantico is going to have to contend with in the event that it wants to stick around on the air for a long time.
If Quantico can keep this rating or improve upon it, is there still a chance for a season 4? We’re not ruling it out, but for now we would argue that the odds are not altogether great. The biggest thing that Quantico has going for it as a series right now is the simple fact that it has some procedural elements to it and that is something ABC needs with some of their shows. With Scandal over they’re really lacking some big-ticket reliable shows beyond The Good Doctor and Grey’s Anatomy in the scripted drama department. We’re not altogether sure that Quantico will be that series at the level that it is right now, but our hope is that as this season progresses, we’re going to have a chance to see more viewers flock to it. When shows like Chicago Fire or SWAT come off the air, there could be a chance for more people to flock over here.
While DVR ratings and international viewing for a show like Quantico do matter (Chopra has a huge international following), at the end of the day live ratings in America are still paramount to the series’ ability to stick around on the air.
