Here and Now canceled at HBO; season 2 not happening

Here and Now canceled

While this may not be the most surprising news out there, it’s still rather sad for the show’s fans: Here and Now has been officially canceled by HBO after just one season on the air.

This news was first confirmed in a statement per Deadline, and it’s not all that hard to figure out why this happened. The ratings for the first season were far from outstanding, and to go along with that the critical reception and social-media following for the show just weren’t there. Typically HBO is the sort of network that will take a chance on a lower-rated show (see The Leftovers) if they feel like there’s a groundswell of support behind it and they think that it is going to stand the test of time. However, Here and Now never really had that on a larger scale. It had a great producing team behind the scenes led by Alan Ball (Six Feet Under, True Blood), but it never managed to combine excellent drama and relevant topics quite as much as it originally set out to do. It may have ultimately tried to balance too much in terms of its story and its themes.

In a statement to the aforementioned site confirming the news, the network had the following to say:

“After careful consideration we have decided not to move forward with a second season of Here and Now … We thank Alan for his dedication to innovative storytelling, and we look forward to his next endeavor.”

While it may have been “careful consideration,” this wasn’t the sort of consideration that took a long time. This cancellation is coming just ten days after the first season ended. That’s quick, but we also understand HBO not wanting to do anything that gave viewers false hope that there would be more of the series coming up when there wouldn’t be.
