Once Upon a Time season 7 episode 19 preview: Gothel’s backstory

Once Upon a Time season 7 episode 19

Once Upon a Time season 7 episode 19 is coming up on ABC next week, and early indications suggest that this episode is following a recent trend. How so? Think along the lines of giving you a major villain’s backstory!

Back in season 6, we had the 19th episode be about the Black Fairy’s backstory, and in past seasons we’ve used this spot to learn about characters like Hades and Zelena. This is just a great time in order to focus on some of these characters, especially since it adds a little bit of drama to the proceedings leading up to the showdown near the end of the season. This time around, some of that focus could be put front and center on Mother Gothel — we’re excited to explore that a little bit further. She’s a complicated character and with that in mind, we’re excited to dive into some of what that story is. Maybe it informs who she is and why she acts the way that she does — remember here that in one way or another, Once Upon a Time does love its sympathetic villains.

One of the larger questions that we’ve got at the moment is how the producers are going to be able to really create tension moving into the end of the season to match some of what we’ve had a chance to see in the past with the series. After all, remember that we’ve already had a chance to witness the “Final Battle” at the end of last season — how do you topple a sense of finality? That is, clearly, something that the series has to figure out as the story winds down for season 7 and the series as a whole.
