Homeland season 8 will take place overseas, show exec confirms

Homeland season 8

As confirmed by series star Claire Danes on Wednesday, Homeland season 8 is going to be the final season of the show. This means that the series is going to get a chance to go out on a reasonably-high note, and also that it is more in control of its own destiny. Just remember here that it would’ve been pretty darn simple for the show to keep going until the ratings completely faded and nobody was talking about it anymore. The writers and producers aren’t doing that.

As a matter of fact, some indications coming out now suggest that for this final season, we’re going to see the Homeland team go big and give you a story that is set overseas, something that we haven’t had on the show in a little while as the series has dealt more with the Keane saga. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Alex Gansa had the following to say on the subject:

“[Season 7 arranges] all the pieces on the chessboard to make that a proper finale for the story we’ve been telling … We get to play this last season in D.C with the intention of taking us overseas for one last chapter. Season 8 will be overseas somewhere. We get to play a story with larger national stakes in season 7 and we’ll go back to a smaller intelligence-based season in 8. We get to pull out all the stops this year and then get to the emotional heart of things in season 8.”

Gansa also notes that he would like for the final season to be set in Israel, and that there is likely going to be a substantial time jump between season 7 and season 8 to get the show away from a story that carries with it some obvious comparisons to what is going on within the Donald Trump administration. Overseas missions are in part the root of what made Homeland the show that it was, so we do understand the desire to get back to that a little bit at the end of the show. Also, this is a way for Gansa and the writers to continue to celebrate some of the work of many of the heroes out there who put their lives on the line, even if you never hear about them in the process.
