Following last night’s finale, is it possible that we’re going to get a Here and Now season 2 renewal — or, is this HBO drama over not long after it started?
The good news here is that in terms of the series’ story, it did actually improve more and more as it progressed. We do think that there is potential for the series to keep on improving, especially now that Alan Ball and the rest of the team know what the viewers like and don’t like about the show.
Yet, in terms of the ratings we do think that Here and Now is facing a very difficult battle in order to get the series back for another season. We’re talking here about a show drawing less than 400,000 viewers an episode. While this may be only live+same-day ratings for HBO and there are so many viewers watching via other means (such as via DVR or HBO NOW), live ratings do very much matter. They provide a nice sample of urgency among viewers.
For the time being, we’re not overly optimistic about a Here and Now season 2 happening. Early reviews were mixed at best and the series hasn’t picked up too much more in the way of buzz as of late. These are the sort of things that HBO really goes for when they look at renewing a show that doesn’t pull the best of ratings. The network also has plenty of other projects coming up down the pipeline, including the final season of Game of Thrones, Big Little Lies season 2, True Detective season 3, and potentially Watchmen from Damon Lindelof among other things. If they want to bring the show back for creative reasons, they will. However, there isn’t necessarily any real urgency to give the series another batch of episodes. We’ll see what happens over the course of the coming months.
