Lost in Space season 2 renewal hopes: Will Netflix bring reboot back?
At the moment, nothing is altogether official; yet, we’ve got a lot of confidence that this particular reboot is one that is going to stick around for a little while. Reviews for the series, which stars Black Sails alum Toby Stephens among many others, have been largely positive. Meanwhile, it’s a family series on a streaming service that does still have a need for a lot of family-oriented programming. It also does have that iconic Lost in Space name and that really means something for parents out there who remember either the original series or the movie that came out based on that.
So why hasn’t Netflix already renewed the show? There are a couple of different reasons for that.
1. They haven’t seen how it performs as of yet – Obviously, renewing a new series before it premieres is a risky move, and while many networks / streaming providers have done this in the past, there is no clear reason for Netflix to do that here. They’re obviously very much aware of the fact that they have a success here in Lost in Space that could potentially have a long run on the air. Yet, they also have dozens of other big programs. In the event that this somehow doesn’t connect with viewers they don’t necessarily need it in order to still be successful.
2. This is likely not a cheap show to make – There’s an added incentive for Netflix to wait when it comes to bringing the show back. They know that it costs a pretty penny so the want to see if it justifies the cost. (All science fiction shows these days are not super-cheap, which is often why some networks like Syfy tend to be pretty tough on either keeping/cancellation some of the shows that are on the air with them.)
Given how long it takes to make Lost in Space, though, we imagine that there is going to be some sort of decision coming out via the folks at Netflix within the next couple of months. It’s hard to imagine them wanting to wait for too long.
