MacGyver season 2: How Lucas Till’s Mac is one of TV’s most-likable heroes

MacGyver season 2 episode 22

In order to have a series like MacGyverlet’s face it: You need to have a pretty incredible Angus MacGyver to make it work. Luckily, we think that CBS and executive producer Peter M. Lenkov have found that in the form of Lucas Till’s Mac. He is the subject of this edition of CarterMatt’s ongoing TV Heroes series and for good reason.

When you just look at the profile of Mac as a character in general, he is without dispute one of the most likable leads out there. He’s almost pure in a way — he has a sterling reputation for helping others, he’s smart, he’s kind, and he’s incredibly resourceful. This is a man who will stop at nothing to catch the bad guys, even to the point where he puts himself in grave danger. He’s also fiercely loyal and protective of his friends. Characters like Bozer, Riley, Matty, and Jack are like family to him, even if one of them is at the moment harboring a secret involving their past with his father.

Beyond just the heroic acts that MacGyver is a part of there is also the notion of what he’s giving up — a normal life, normal friends, and also real relationships. He’s so willing to help others that he is willing to cut out major parts of his life that almost everyone else has to the point where he doesn’t even spend all that much time thinking about it. Because of these decisions you can probably also see some of Mac’s flaws: He’s detached at times from the real world, he is not altogether quick to trust, and he often has to see things so much within the now that he can’t plan ahead and have much of a future. That’s why relationships for him are so difficult.

Yet, these flaws make the man interesting and they also better round out who he is as a character. No hero, whether it be in television or in life, can have every single thing that they want and it’s those sacrifices that go into making that person a hero. This connects them to all of us watching and despite Mac’s many skills and superhuman ability to free himself from almost any bind with a paperclip and some gum, he still cannot protect himself from loneliness or a broken heart. We’ll keep rooting for Mac, no matter what the future holds — just like we’re going to keep rooting for Lucas Till to keep delivering the goods as this character. He makes Mac so inherently likable and fun — he just has a natural way of carrying the character that makes you eager to know and understand him better. Few other people out there could craft both an action hero and a human being at the same time so effectively as Till does with Mac.
