Roseanne ratings fall more; latest on Rise, For the People, Lethal Weapon

Roseanne season 11

There are a few different ratings odds and ends to look at for this week, but of course CarterMatt understands that the Roseanne viewing figures are a subject of great conversation for many at the moment. After debuting to some of the biggest ratings in years for a comedy series the sitcom has lost a little bit of steam; yet, it’s not anywhere near enough to call this revival a flash in the pan just yet.

On Tuesday night the fourth episode of the season (remember, the first week featured two episodes airing back to back) drew a 3.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic to go along with almost 13.5 million viewers. These numbers are still huge and if ABC gets these averages the rest of the way this season Roseanne will still be considered a runaway hit.

Yet, it seems silly to proclaim that ABC will continue to get these averages since the odds are pretty low that this is going to be the case for a number of different reasons. Last week, the comedy fell about 24% from the two-episode premiere. This week, Roseanne fell about 12%. The declines are slowing down so we figure that its natural resting place this season will probably be in the 2.5-3.0 range. That’s still great and something that the network should be happy with. Whether or not it can pull off some of these same ratings in the 2018-2019 season remains to be seen.

The state of some bubble shows

Lethal Weapon – After its recent hiatus the Fox drama drew a 0.8 rating, which isn’t something that makes us altogether confident in its future. We have four big-time bubble shows in Lethal Weapon, Lucifer, Gotham, and The Resident; it’s hard to figure out if Fox will cancel one of them or try to find a way to bring back all four.

Rise – The good news for the NBC drama is that it did improve its total viewers for the second straight week. Yet, it did still post a 0.8 that makes you wonder if it is really making the most of its lead-in. This is a show right now that is definitely still on the renewal bubble. Chicago Med is airing after it and yet, it’s finding a way to perform better.

For the People – While it did get a bump for a while thanks to Roseanne earlier in the night, with a 0.6 Tuesday it’s back to being in grave danger. At this rate, we don’t see it returning.
