Star Trek: Discovery season 2: Anson Mount of Hell on Wheels joins cast

Star Trek: Discovery premiere

In today’s edition of “news that excites us immensely,” CarterMatt is pleased to talk about Anson Mount, star of one of our favorite shows of the past several years in Hell on Wheels, is now on board Star Trek: Discovery season 2.

As if this news wasn’t exciting enough, also know this: Mount is playing the immensely-famous part of Captain Christopher Pike, the man known for leading the USS Enterprise prior to James T. Kirk. It was first teased that Pike was coming at the end of the first season of Star Trek: Discovery, and this casting more or less confirms the direction in which the series is now going in with the character. Pike’s going to be around for a while as the CBS All Access series explores the dynamic between these multiple ships.

This is a great casting, largely because Mount excels at playing complex, powerful men who also still grapple with emotional burdens. This is something he carried with him throughout his time on Hell on Wheels as Cullen Bohannon, and after that also took over to ABC’s Inhumans, a series that featured him this past fall. This casting may further cement that series’ fate, though it was unlikely that Inhumans would return based on its season 1 ratings.

Star Trek: Discovery season 2 does not have a firm premiere date, but we hope that the series chooses to do something similar to season 1 and launch the premiere on CBS proper. This offers up a chance to expose even more viewers to the story and this character; hopefully, this will in turn court some fans of the original Star Trek to the show.

Some of Mount’s other TV credits including the 2006 series Conviction, Law & Order, and Dollhouse. The more TV appearances we see from him, the happier we’re going to be in the end.
