Shadowhunters season 3 episode 2 ratings tumble, but by how much?

Going into Shadowhunters season 3 episode 2, we did expect there to be a certain decline in the live ratings. This often does happen following premieres, where viewers often choose to watch live out of excitement after waiting for so long to see the series come back on the air. CarterMatt has seen this sort of trend play out over the years.

Yet, we also don’t want to see the series lose too much steam, mostly because ratings are what keeps a show like Shadowhunters on the air. Even though Freeform and the production company generate income from a wide array of means, whether it be DVR viewing, streaming after the fact, or viewers watching licensed versions of the show in other countries, the live ratings on the original network in America are really the lifeblood of the series. It’s the easiest money for them to see and it is a great jumping-off point to everything else.

The good news for Shadowhunters season 3 episode 2 is that the show did match the 0.2 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic (important for advertisers) that it drew during the premiere. If it does continue to draw those kind of numbers we remain fairly optimistic that a season 4 will happen on the other side of season 3. However, in total viewers Shadowhunters went from posting 490,000 total viewers in the premiere to just 444,000 in the second episode. You don’t want to see declines at that rate for the remainder of the season or then it’s time to worry.

The good news for Shadowhunters is simply this: While there are often declines for shows between their second and third episodes, it is overall a little less frequent. With that, there is no guarantee that things are going to continue to go down. Hopefully the viewership starts to level off now.

There are plenty of reasons for Shadowhunters to continue to draw good ratings, whether it be the action, the romance, or the presence of new villains like Lilith that should continue to find a way to raise the stakes.
