The first thing that you should know is this: There is a pretty good chance that The Alienist season 2 will happen, though it’s not official. While this show is in some ways a limited series, at the same time there has always been a hope that it potentially could come back for another go-around.
When you look at the ratings alone for the series, you can see that there is a strong case to bring it back for more. We’re talking about a show that is averaging a solid 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and also close to 1.8 million viewers. Even if these are not earth-shattering ratings by any means, they are decent ratings for TNT as a network. This is without even factoring in everyone who is watching this series after the fact — there is a larger audience out there that isn’t even being fully tabulated here. These ratings just in terms of live viewing alone are better than some shows on The CW — if a cable series can topple some broadcast shows, there is always a good chance of it coming back.
One of the bigger questions here simply relates to The Alienist in terms of whatever sort of story it could tell for a season 2 — and much of that is hard to prognosticate until we get a chance to actually see the season 1 finale in full. We do think that, no matter how it ends, there will be a way to bring the story back if there is enough interest from the powers-that-be. Just remember that USA is bringing back The Sinner for another season, even if it was fully billed as a limited series and had a very clear beginning, middle, and end. This alone suggests that anything is possible with other series.
