Deception season 1: Will Kay and Cameron become a couple anytime soon?

Deception season 1

The question in the title was posed by a Deception fan to Entertainment Weekly during their Spoiler Room discussion and the answer may come as a surprise to some. Executive producer Chris Fedak explained to fans that Kay and Cameron will not be a couple anytime soon, however, he did let fans know that romance is coming, just not where you’d expect it:

“Nope, nothing. There’s definitely a bond between Cameron and Kay. They’re quickly becoming fast friends and real partners. But right now, Cameron’s brother is in prison. Getting Johnny out is his priority. And Kay needs Cameron for a hundred other cases she has to solve. But I’m a veteran of a few ‘shipping situations. I know there are things you can’t control when making TV. We’ve discovered a bunch of really interesting dynamics throughout the season, so yes, there will be romance in this show, just not where you expect.”

While most people may be surprised, we are actually happy about it. The obvious thing for this series to do is to start the romantic connection between the leads, and as we have mentioned before we want this series to differentiate itself from similar shows and this is a perfect way to do it. By having Cameron focus on getting his brother out of jail and having him and Kay be strictly partners in order to solve crimes the show stands out more. Now we understand Fedak has said he hasn’t ruled out a relationship between the two in the future, however, we are happy that’s not his overall objective.

Fedak did mention that there will be romance on the show, just not where you would expect. This intrigues us. It makes us think about where and who it would involve. It also is a great way to get fans to come back every week in order to find out who it will be and who our next television couple obsession will be.

Overall, we are happy to see this series start to separate itself from the others and focus on the mystery we have been investigating from the start. We are all wondering how this how ordeal with Cameron’s brother, Johnny, will end and we look forward to traveling down that rabbit hole to find out. And if EP Chris Fedak does eventually decide to put Kay and Cameron together, we hope it will be in the show’s own unique way.
