Outlander, Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe among Saturn Awards 2018 nominees

Watch the Outlander season 3 premiere

While we await Emmy nominations later this year, there is some good news to report when it comes to Outlander and another awards show in the 2018 Saturn Awards. The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films will present their 44th ceremony this June and the Starz series is up for many big awards.

For everyone out there curious, here are the three main ones that feature Outlander in some shape or form.

Best Fantasy Television Series

American Gods (Starz)
Game of Thrones (HBO)
The Good Place (NBC)
Knightfall (History Channel)
The Librarians (TNT)
The Magicians (SyFy)
Outlander (Starz)

Best Actor on a Television Series

Jon Bernthal Marvel’s The Punisher (Netflix)
Bruce Campbell Ash vs. Evil Dead (Starz)
Sam Heughan Outlander (Starz)
Jason Isaacs Star Trek: Discovery (CBS All Access)
Andrew Lincoln The Walking Dead (AMC)
Seth MacFarlane The Orville (Fox Television)
Kyle MacLachlan Twin Peaks: The Return (Showtime)
Ricky Whittle American Gods (Starz)

Best Actress on a Television Series

Gillian Anderson The X-Files (Fox Television)
Caitriona Balfe Outlander (Starz)
Melissa Benoist Supergirl (The CW)
Lena Headey Game of Thrones (HBO)
Sonequa Martin-Green Star Trek: Discovery (CBS All Access)
Adrianne Palicki The Orville (Fox Television)
Sarah Paulson American Horror Story: Cult (FX)
Mary Elizabeth Winstead Fargo (FX)

Of these three categories, we do think that there is a chance that Outlander, plus Heughan and Balfe, all end up winning. Sure, there is some good competition in here — Game of Thrones is consistently fantastic and The Librarians is delightful — but Outlander brings so many different dimensions to the table that we don’t quite think any other show can replicate it. As for the acting categories, Whittle and Bernthal could serve as competition for Sam, while Caitriona could face challenges from Gillian (presumably in her final season) as well as Lena and Sonequa. CarterMatt feels pretty optimistic that everything related to Outlander has a really good chance to take home a trophy.

Last year the series itself did win for Fantasy Series; meanwhile, Heughan lost the Actor category to Andrew Lincoln while Melissa Benoist took home the Actress prize over Balfe.

For now, congratulations to all on their nominations! We’ve long maintained that a presence at every awards show is significant in generating buzz towards shows like the Emmys — also, the success of The Shape of Water at the Oscars this year proves further that awards shows aren’t considering genres like fantasy and science fiction unworthy of awards anymore. Thank goodness that is coming to an end.
