Starz orders The Spanish Princess limited series from Emma Frost, Matthew Graham
The Spanish Princess is coming to you from The White Princess and The White Queen’s own Emma Frost, with Matthew Graham of Life on Mars joining her as co-showrunner and executive producer. Based on the official logline that CarterMatt has for you below, the focus this time around is going to be primarily on the earlier life of Catherine of Aragon prior to her marriage to Henry VIII:
Catherine of Aragon, is the beautiful teenaged princess of Spain who was promised the English throne since she was a child. She arrives in a grey, rain-lashed England with her glorious and diverse court including her lady-in-waiting Lina – an African Moor. She is Princess of Wales now, but when her husband Prince Arthur dies suddenly, the throne seems lost to Catherine … Until she claims her marriage was never consummated and that as a virgin she may set her sights on the new heir, the charismatic and headstrong Prince Harry who will one day rule as King Henry VIII.
Obviously, there is a great deal to like about The Spanish Princess being ordered, starting with the sole fact that it is another historical drama with Frost on board; the aforementioned series on the network were both fantastic and we have a feeling that this one will live up to the high standard already set. What we also appreciate about these series is that they focus in on specific periods in history that haven’t been completely touched on before, at least in this way. While The Tudors may have covered a reasonably similar era, its main focus was on King Henry and less on Catherine. This show will have a voice and a strength that is uniquely its own.
There is no official premiere date for The Spanish Princess as of right now; once there is more known, we will absolutely have that for you here.
