American Housewife season 2 casts Nathan Fillion … as Firefly character?

American Housewife

If you love either American Housewife or Firefly, the following bit of news is going to be a reason to celebrate. Nathan Fillion will be appearing on a season 2 episode later this year and while he’s technically playing himself, his costume certainly suggests that he will be playing himself as a version of Malcolm Reynolds, the famous Captain from the short-lived Fox series.

Fillion’s appearance should be worthy of some laughs, and there is some interesting trivia around it. This is not the first time that he has referenced the Mal role on another series in which he’s a part of. Previously, he dressed up in the signature browncoat for an episode of Castle — Fillion has long been active on the convention circuit and he’s never shied away from playing variations of the character that made him a household name. Firefly may have only aired for a single season on Fox but it eventually launched a sequel movie in Serenity — since that time there have been calls for more, but based on both the events of the movie and the passing of cast member Ron Glass we may be past the time where that is feasible.

Beyond just American Housewife and Castle, Fillion has a pretty strong relationship with ABC. He has appeared on a recurring basis on Modern Family and is now making a new series for the network entitled The Rookie, which could air at some point during the 2018-19 season. This would be his first series-regular gig since the end of Castle a couple of years ago.

For American Housewife, this casting is another way in which to boost the show’s ratings — we do feel cautiously optimistic that the show will return for another season, but a little boost never hurt anyone, right? We’ll see what happens by the time we get around to May.
