Once Upon a Time series finale title: ‘Leaving Storybrooke’ and its meaning
So what in the world is going on here? The episode, written by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, is a clear sign that in one way we are revisiting the show’s iconic setting featured in the first six seasons. However, what is not as clear is why — and also why we would say goodbye to it. Maybe this is representative of us saying goodbye to it as viewers … or maybe some of the characters are, as well.
Would it be great to sit here and speculate on possible timelines for the episode? Sure, but it’s hard to do that given that the time period for the series finale is not entirely clear. What also isn’t known right now is who will be appearing as a guest star in the episode. Horowitz and Kitsis have said that they are interested in bringing back anyone who wants to come back, and we’d hope to see everyone from Jennifer Morrison to Ginnifer Goodwin to Josh Dallas to Sean Maguire to virtually anyone who has ever been a major part of the show. Heck, we’d probably pass out if Jamie Dornan appeared for the first time in years as Sheriff Graham.
Ultimately, what matters the most is that “Leaving Storybrooke” is a sign that the producers are taking the need for closure seriously. This series has taken some of its characters on a long, elaborate journey through many different eras in worlds. It’s now time to build towards what we’d like to think of as a happily ever after. The biggest struggle we foresee within this episode is the writing staff finding a way to close the door on some of the events of this season while also paying homage to everything that happened within the first six seasons. In some ways, these are very different stories and almost even different shows in terms of the main characters.
