Agents of SHIELD season 5: Is Coulson ready to die?

Clark Gregg

Moving past Friday night’s Agents of SHIELD episode there are two key things standing out as pieces of information to know — Fitz and Simmons are now married and Coulson is getting near the end of his life — again. The irony with that, though, is that there are so many people who still think he’s dead from what happened before even the start of the series.

As the series moves forward following the 100th episode, one of the main objectives is now abundantly clear: Find a way to save Phil at just about any cost, even though it’s sure to not be easy and there will probably be a few roadblocks and hurdles that everyone should be forced to overcome. For one, they have to find the necessary material in order to save him (read more on that here), and that won’t prove easy. Beyond just that, though, Phil also has to keep fighting. There is such a thing as acceptance, but you also don’t want to settle for that as your ultimate fate.

In speaking to Entertainment Weekly on Clark Gregg’s character and how he seems to be handling the realization that he could be near death, executive producer Jed Whedon had the following to say:

I think it’s very clear in the episode of how he’s approaching it. Though a lot of emotion does come out with Mike Peterson, he’s come to terms with it. It’s something he actually had to come to terms with a long time ago when he was discovering the T.A.H.I.T.I. Project and everything that had been done to him. I don’t think he wants to go through any of that again. He’s ready for nature to take its course. You can sense from everybody else in the episode that they’re not as willing to let go as he seems to be. Some of that will play out. What happens, we’ll have to wait and see, but he seems as much at peace with it as you can be considering there’s so much he’s done in a world that thinks he’s dead.

Now, can Phil still overcome what ails him? We hope so, given that the last way we want to see season 5 (and, by association, the rest of the entire series) end is with this character dying after being beloved to so many people for so long. He’s just been the entire heart and soul of SHIELD and a key component to the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Eventually, though, we also realize that characters must die, and in particular Marvel has come under fire for continuously bringing characters to the edge and then finding ways to keep them around. We understand not wanting to be rid of beloved characters, but after a certain period of time you start to become the comic-book company who cried wolf.

Do you think Coulson will die on Agents of SHIELD?
