Here are ABC’s American Idol 16 ratings expectations

American Idol 16 ratings

Leading to the big premiere on Sunday night, do you want to know some of the American Idol 16 ratings expectations? Well, let’s just say that the network is being cautiously optimistic at the moment when it comes to the future of the series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, ABC is guaranteeing to ad buyers at least a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic going into the start of the new season. This is a fairly modest guarantee given that it includes DVR figures. While we do think that the series will hit that, exactly how much better than that it performs remains to be seen.

For the time being, our feeling is that the premiere on Sunday will probably bring in a 2.0 in the live+same-day ratings, mostly because of the long layoff between seasons, ABC’s promotional campaign, and the presence of Katy Perry as a judge. On the other side of that, though, we would’ve be shocked to see the series bringing in around a 1.5 and needed some of these DVR ratings in order to bring the show back to a 1.8.

There are a few different reasons to be skeptical at the moment when it comes to the future of American Idol that also have to be considered.

1. Singing show fatigue – The ever-declining ratings for The Voice confirm that the thirst for this sort of programming isn’t what it once was.

2. An unproven night – American Idol has never aired on Sundays before and, while it may appear to be a great night for family programming, there are no guarantees.

3. Ryan Seacrest – While ABC has stood by the host, the recent allegations against him do change the sentiment around what is otherwise a positive show. He may deny the allegations, but that did not stop the E! red carpet show before the Oscars last week from feeling comfortable. There were only a limited number of big-name interviews and Taraji P. Henson openly shaded him while on the red carpet.
