Will Thea Queen leave Arrow by season’s end?

Speedy returns - is Willa Holland leaving

There’s been speculation for some time that Roy Harper’s arrival on Arrow could eventually pave the way for the exit of Thea Queen, and on Thursday night’s new episode there was even more fuel added to the fire.

At one point during a heart-to-heart, Oliver told his sister that if she’s really never been the same since Roy left Star City, she should depart with him the next time in which he leaves. With that, the door definitely seems to be open that this is how this storyline for the characters will end later this season. There is no guarantee that this will be exactly how Thea leaves, but it feels like this would be a nice way to put a bow on this character’s arc.

The unfortunate reality with Thea is that for the past two years, Arrow has really struggled to know precisely what to do with this character. She is written off the show for long periods of time and when she’s around, she often serves as a means of deliver exposition for Oliver within the Mayor’s Office. Thursday’s episode was the first time since the Arrowverse crossover in 2016 that she had worn the Speedy costume — that was exciting, but it could also be short-lived.

In general, though, Arrow is a series that right now needs to develop a little more of an identity as to the sort of show that it wants to be and also the key characters who are going to be a huge part of the show. There is a lot of predictability to the series now and the lack of a consistent villain has started to created some problems in terms of intensity. It seems as though we’re starting to be on the right track with Ricardo Diaz, but there’s still so much that we don’t know about the guy — including precisely what his original motivation was for going down his current dark road. One of the most compelling parts of the show right now is Black Siren, mostly because seeing her act as Laurel is bringing back memories of when that character was still alive.

Hopefully, the next several episodes will provide some answers — our personal hope is that if Thea does leave, it won’t be until closer to the end of the season.
