This Is Us season 2: Deja’s return is a shock to Beth and Randall

Tuesday night’s episode of This Is Us is all about the foster girl Beth and Randall took in and her past. According to Entertainment Weekly, the episode will flash between the present and the past in order for the audience to better understand Deja’s return. Executive producer Isaac Aptaker explained a little further the vision the writers had for this episode”

“We’re doing something really really cool and really outside the box. [Lyric has] just been so strong for us and we’ve fallen in love with the actor and the character, so we’re doing an episode where we step away from our Pearsons and tell this story from beginning to end of Deja and what led to her coming into Randall [Sterling K. Brown] and Beth [Susan Kelechi Watson] and the girls’ lives.”

The episode will also learn more about Deja’s mother and the rife between the two of them. In fans will recall Deja’s mother got out of jail and then returned to take Deja back from Randall and Beth. Aptaker continued by giving fans a hint of their relationship.

“We’re going to see how it’s a really complicated relationship where there’s a lot of love, but also a lot of angst. We’re going to see how Linda [the social worker played by Debra Jo Rupp] came into the picture. It’s very exciting because it’s all these characters we’ve come to know, but if you think about it, we really know very, very little. We’ve only heard a couple of things here and there about her situation before. And now we’re going to see the other side of the coin. And like we did with the Big Three trilogy [of episodes that closed out the first half of the season], it will intersect in very cool ways with the story as we know it — and we’ll see where characters were when moments we’ve seen were happening.”

From the looks of things, we are going down an avenue we didn’t even knew what to go down. As we read this quote over and over, we are hit with the realization that yes, we feel like we know these characters, when in reality we don’t. This fact makes us even more excited for Tuesday. For one, how will Randall and Beth react to this. According to Aptaker, Randall and Beth will be thrown through a loop. When Deja left, they were upset and took the couple some time to come to grips with her absence. Many questions will be running through their minds and rightfully so. Will Deja leave again after this latest visit?
