Lucifer season 3 episode 17 review: Meet Bree … or, Abel

Lauren Lapkus

Early on in Lucifer season 3 episode 17, we got a good sense that we would get to see one of the title character’s crazier plans in motion. After all, Lucifer got quite the interesting idea when it comes to how to help Cain — bringing back Abel and transferring their soul into another body. If the curse could be broken, then what that meant was that Cain could actually be killed. He finally could get what he wanted.

This brought us to Bree Garland. She was the assistant to a celebrity, someone who was on the verge of death because of the case. There was quite the debate as to whether or not to bring Abel’s soul into that body but, at the end of the day, it happened as the result of an accident. Lucifer meant to throw the soul into an old man; instead, he put the soul into Bree’s body.

The more that we ended up getting a chance to learn about Abel, the more entertaining things started to become. This is basically Lucifer in a woman’s body and there was the propensity for entertainment gold with that and that alone. It took Abel a while to actually realize that he was in a woman’s body; following that, Amenadiel eventually was able to track “Bree” down. Amenadiel did his best to convince the character to just take their own life and with that, end the curse once and for all.

Yet, did the suicide happen? Not exactly. Instead, eventually Abel was tracked down by Cain and with that, proposed what was the plan to kill him. Alas, that didn’t work. Cain’s plan to use Abel to kill himself more or less backfired.

As for the case itself…

In the midst of everything going on with Abel, it was easy to forget that the case of Bree was actually going on here at the same exact time! She had some shocking ties to the Bolivian cartel and following that, it was clear that Bree was actually exploiting her boss.

Eventually, the case itself culminated with Chloe learning that Bree, before her death, was trying to do the right thing. Unfortunately, she also found herself tied to a dangerous bomb. Chloe put her life on the line in order to help Bree get out of there alive, unknowing as to what was actually going on. She was able to actually save Bree’s life, and in the aftermath of that Lucifer actually started to feel guilty that he was putting her in harm’s way yet again.

Other odds and ends

Following the case, Abel apologized to Cain for not being able to actually help to remove the mark and free him of the Earth. It seems as though we won’t be seeing Abel for a while, alas … Bree seemingly getting hit by a car at the end definitely suggests why.

Instead, in the closing minutes Lucifer decided to end his partnership with Cain, thinking that continuing to work with him would lead to the death of Chloe. He couldn’t allow that to happen.

CarterMatt Verdict

There were funny moments aplenty within this episode, whether it be Chloe getting jealous over Marcus partnering up with Lucifer or simply just seeing Abel talk repeatedly about their “flock” while stuck in someone else’s body.
