Oscars 2018 opening: Jimmy Kimmel skewers Mike Pence, starts speech ‘contest’
To be frank, we didn’t expect to see Kimmel playing it safe. This is a man who has made a name for himself going hard and being bold, and we expected virtually nothing else from him here. He did start off by mocking the accountants and the disaster that happened with the results last year. (Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty will be appearing on the show later on.)
Following this, Jimmy Kimmel mocked the Oscar statue itself and talked about social issues in the country — Me Too, Time’s Up, Never Again, and other important people who are doing important things in order to ensure that the industry and the world are changed for the better.
Kimmel also introduced a new contest tonight in order to ensure that the speeches didn’t go too long — the person with the shortest overall speech gets a jetski. Otherwise, there are no plans to cut anyone off before they talk about whatever it is that they want to in front of all America.

Overall, this was a pretty solid opening of the show — while we do think that most of this was predictable, Kimmel just has a knack for hitting the right notes with his delivery. This was fun, but beyond that he did a good job of really recognizing history and how important certain parts of the ceremony are. Times are changing in Hollywood, and changing for the better. The funniest moment of the entire speech was Kimmel claiming that many of the movies existed to upset Mike Pence.
