Magnum PI casts Penny Dreadful alum Perdita Weeks as Juliet Higgins
You may have heard in the past that Magnum PI was gender-flipping the role of Jonathan Higgins. We know that there are purists out there who may be upset about this (like many initially were with Joan Watson over on Elementary) but our advice is this: Give it a shot. Anytime that there’s a revived version of a TV show someone complains about some element of it — here, Peter M. Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim have shown time and time again with Hawaii Five-0 (and Lenkov with MacGyver) that they are more than capable of altering landmark series and characters while staying true to their original essence. The new MacGyver is incredible, even if it’s much more of an ensemble show than the original with Richard Dean Anderson.
When it comes to Perdita Weeks in particular there’s a lot to be excited about just in terms of her resume alone. Whether it be Penny Dreadful (as Catriona on the third season), The Musketeers, or Grantchester, or The Tudors, she comes from overseas with an impeccable history. She’s going to do a fantastic job in this role and we’re excited to see it — this is a very different sort of role than what she’s taken on so far!
Weeks’ casting comes after Jay Hernandez of Suicide Squad was recently cast as the title character; even more castings are going to be coming soon. While Magnum PI is not officially getting a series order and you don’t want to count your chickens before they hatch, this one feels as close to a lock as a CBS pilot is going to get. You’ve got an established team on board the show and a familiar property.
