Agents of SHIELD season 5 being written as possible series finale

Nick Blood returning

While it is not entirely clear at the moment if Agents of SHIELD season 5 is going to be the final season of the show or not on ABC — it’s had a good run, but the show is struggling to bring in too much of a large audience in its new timeslot on Friday nights. Admittedly, the ratings are better than we thought that they would be, especially in the demo, within that timeslot. Still, that may not matter all that much. We’re talking here about a series that barely got a renewal for a fifth season and is on the other side of its 100th episode. ABC and everyone in the cast and crew can feel satisfied with what has been achieved to date.

the only thing that the producers can do at present with the finale coming up this spring is prepare no matter what. Speaking to TVLine, executive producer Jed Whedon confirmed that he and the rest of the team are “ready for if this is the end. We’re definitely going to make it rewarding either way.” There are plans for the finale to function as a series-ender, and there could still be flexibility to change things up here and there depending on what ABC decides.

Don’t be altogether shocked if the producers film a few contingency scenes just in case they need to be added to a possible series finale down the road. This is something that another show in Castle did and ended up using after the dumpster fire that was ABC deciding whether or not they want to bring the series back.

As of right now, we do think that there’s value in doing one more Agents of SHIELD season, even if it’s just 13 episodes, as a way to usher in whatever is next for Marvel entertainment on the network. Given the failure of Inhumans, we don’t want to see the network completely sputter out most of their Marvel programming this year.
