The Voice video: Kyla Jade, Jennifer Hudson background singer, auditions

Kyla Jade

Who is Kyla Jade? Think in terms of a contestant on The Voice this season with a rather incredible story to go along with it. Kyle is a background singer who works with Jennifer Hudson — as a matter of fact, she’s even been on the show’s stage performing with her before! It’s not often you see a contestant on this show come on with this sort of history performing.

If you are a background singer for an Oscar winner, there’s generally a pretty darn good shot you know what you are doing. Kyla certainly proves that with this audition. She performs a rousing rendition of Aretha Franklin’s hit “See Saw,” one that gets the attention of both Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson.

This sort of showdown is one of the reasons why The Voice producers have Kelly as a part of this show. She and Blake have a long history together and their friendship leads to them having a natural rapport. She trolls him in the best possible ways and also does her part to make it clear that she has what it takes to win this whole season with her. We do find it funny that Kelly doesn’t actually mention American Idol by name, as though the show’s producers don’t want to remind you that the singing show is returning as competition in just a matter of weeks. (The only thing crazier is NBC continuing to refer to these performances as “leaked auditions” online even though it’s pretty darn clear that they release them intentionally.)

Kyla’s long-term success this season is mostly going to come via arrangement and finding a way to perform songs that you don’t expect her to necessarily do. We know she can sing better than probably 99% of the contestants this season, but there are also many other singers like her with great voices out there. She needs to hone something else to stand out.
