Big Brother Canada 6 pre-game interview: Meet bartender Maddy Poplett

Maddy Poplett

Welcome to our Big Brother Canada 6 pre-game interview series! We recently had a chance to speak with the houseguests leading up to the start of this new season, premiering on Global on March 7, as we’ve done years in the past. The goal this year was to find out a little bit about these players strategically, but also a little more about them as people. We want to know why they’re going to be interesting personalities to watch over the coming months and where they are coming from.

If you want to get some other Big Brother Canada pre-game interviews, you can do so by visiting this link.

In this article, the focus is on Maddy Poplett, a bartender who loves Big Brother Canada so much that she has applied for it almost every year. This was her opportunity to finally get a chance to compete.

For more on her strategy, take a look at the pre-game interview below.

CarterMatt – Tell me about yourself — your name, your age, and where you’re from.

Maddy Poplett – I’m Maddy, I’m 25, I’m from Ottawa, and I’m a bartender.

What made you want to be on Big Brother Canada this season?

This is my fifth time applying for Big Brother Canada so [my love] has intensified every year. [My love started] watching Survivor when I was younger and I thought ‘wow, this is so amazing.’ I just could’ve done without the whole surviving part.

I wasn’t one of those people who didn’t start watching Big Brother as a kid. I didn’t really dive in until about season 14 US and about halfway through. After one episode of watching it I was like ‘this is what I’ve always wanted to do.’ I just hadn’t realized it. Following that was the first season of Big Brother Canada and I’ve been trying out every since. Everything about the competitions and the social game and the wackiness — it’s so dumb but it’s also so amazing.

What’s your strategy for winning this season?

My initial strategy before the Big Banger of a strategy is to try to listen as much or more than I speak, which will be an adjustment for me but I can do it for sure. Also, to remember to be perceptive and adaptable.

As for my Big Banger strategy, which is going to be polarizing … I’m not the sort of girl who, in the real world, needs a boyfriend or any boys around. In the Big Brother house I think I am going to need a showmance to succeed. I don’t want a showmance, but I need a showmance.

Who are you most like from past Big Brother seasons, US or Canada?

Honestly it’s hard to say — I don’t think that there’s anyone I am exactly like by any means. As for some games I would hope to emulate, once again these may be polarizing. I’m a big fan of Andy Herren’s from season 15. He was always in every room for every conversation, and there was a point when he won HoH — there’s this meme that goes around the internet every year that is kind of like the Brady Bunch where he is in the middle and all of the houseguests around him are in the Diary Room saying how comfortable they feel with Andy as the HoH. He’s just sitting in the middle with his hand in every basket.

Completely on the opposite end of the spectrum there’s Ika Wong. I was a big fan of her last year — I was a big fan of her in season 2 also, but especially last year. I just admire a woman in any situation who can so boldly be herself and still be successful with it. She wasn’t afraid to say what she had to say. She was fearless in putting people on the spot who deserved to be on the spot.

I don’t know if those two are compatible (laughs), but those two are my top two for sure.

What’s the one part of your life at home you’re going to miss the most in the game?

Definitely, I will miss my cat the most! I know that’s a lame answer but I will miss my cat so much and he’s going to have no idea where I am. My family and friends are going to figure it out and they can listen and watch; he’s going to be wondering everyday when I’m coming back.

Who is your biggest idol in life and why?

Definitely it’s my dad. He always says that he’s an 18-year old in a 50-something-year old’s body. To remain positive and youthful, while still having this amazing work ethic, is something I definitely idolize for sure.

How are you going to keep live feed viewers at home entertained?

If live feed viewers like to listen to some chatting, that is definitely something they will get from me. I am definitely very perceptive and quick in my remarks. Working in the service industry my whole life has gotten me to a place where I just think that everything everyone says is something to make a humorous remark about. I love hearing other people’s stories and telling my own stories. If live feed viewers are interested in hearing some potentially interesting conversations or sarcastic remarks, those will be coming from me.

I’m also not opposed to pulling off some pranks every once in a while if provided the tools to do so.

Besides the money, what are you hoping to get out of this season?

This is my DREAM. Everything, everyday, speaking to you on the vote — everything, pre, post, and during. That is what I’m getting out of this experience. Living in the Big Brother house will be an experience in itself. I’m hoping to get every bit of the Big Brother experience that I can. I’m hoping to be a Have-Not, to be HoH, to win a Veto, to maybe even talk to Marsha … Afterwards, I want to feel like the experience, regardless of the outcome, has been positive. Also I want to continue to be a part of the Big Brother lifestyle like I was before coming on the show.

First Impressions

She’s a real student of the game and she’s following the lead of some very good players. She could do very well, but we know that we’re saying that about a lot of people this season! There are a lot of super-fans within this group.
