Ray Donovan season 6: Will Ray’s family join him in New York?

Ray Donovan season 5 episode 4

When Ray Donovan season 6 premieres on Showtime presumably later this year, it’s going to be clear that things are different. It’s hard not to make that clear when a big chunk of the season is moving to New York City. With Abby’s death, the series was already going to be different. Now, it is even more so given that you’re taking away a big part of the series’ overall identity when it comes to its setting. Los Angeles was a huge factor in what made the series so special. Now, that is being chipped away. This move could offer up a fresh start for Ray, but you do have to consider that it really could just end up causing him a little bit of chaos instead.

How just how are the team going to prepare for the big changes this season? This is something that series star Liev Schreiber discussed in a new interview with Collider:

“We pick up where we left off […] we’re working on the first five scripts, and Ray’s family is there, for the most part. And they come and go and there are events that require their presence, and some of it will also continue to shoot in LA. Mickey’s in prison, Bunchy’s still in LA, Terry comes to New York to train that fighter. But there are some events fairly early on the season that get them all together again.”

The biggest takeaway from here is simple: While there are going to be some substantial changes with Ray Donovan in a new setting, there will be ways for many characters to reunite. We almost wonder if the distance will make some of the reunions all the stronger. For example, how much weight is the next Mickey – Ray scene going to be if they don’t spend that much time together. The series is probably better suited looking for how these characters would organically behave rather than trying to find a way to force them together.
