Is Kristin Chenoweth’s American Gods future in even more doubt due to Trial & Error casting?

Kristin Chenoweth

There is some great news when it comes to Trial & Error season 2 … but it may not be good news in the slightest when it comes to the future of Kristin Chenoweth on American Gods.

On Thursday, NBC confirmed that Chenoweth will be appearing on Trial & Error in the role of an eccentric heiress named Lavinia Peck-Foster, someone who ends up being on trial for murder. What happened? Her husband Edgar’s body is discovered stuff in a suitcase in the back of her car. It’s pretty obvious that she is going to be the #1 suspect in the case, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that she is the guilty party. That is why she is going to hire the law first led by Josh (Nicholas D’Agosto) in order to help her.

This is exciting news, mostly in that it was going to be hard for NBC to find someone who would be a worthy replacement to John Lithgow, who starred in the first season of the anthology comedy series. Chenoweth is great at playing these sort of outlandish, eccentric characters and she should work very well within the established framework of the series.

However, we do wonder what this means in terms of her availability for the second season of American Gods, which recently found a showrunner. She already expressed ambivalence about her participation after the exit of Bryan Fuller as showrunner, but now her future could be very much dependent on her schedule. Maybe there is a way to work out both (she really didn’t appear all the much on American Gods season 1), but if the schedules collide Trial & Error is obviously now the priority.

There is no specific Trial & Error season 2 premiere date as of yet. Once there is a little more insight on that subject, we will have some of that info for you at CarterMatt.
