Outlander season 4 mystery: Will Duncan Innes be replaced?

Duncan Innes

We know that entering Outlander season 4 that there are many different mysteries out there worth discussing — we like to consider the character of Duncan Innes to be one of them.

Who is he? For non-book readers, there may not be too much of an awareness of him. He was originally introduced in the Diana Gabaldon book Voyager, where Jamie uncovers him in Edinburgh after originally serving time with him in Ardsmuir. After losing an arm Duncan is unable to work, and he ends up becoming a character within the fourth book Drums of Autumn.

As for why all of this matters now, much of that has to tie in to the rumors that Duncan may never surface on the show. Instead, the producers may be doing a bit of a remix, which is something that many other book – TV adaptations often do. It’s a way to keep the soul of the book alive while also working the show to suit its own needs. One of the big theories out there is that the character of Murtagh and Duncan are going to be molded into a single person. This is a theory that does make a lot of sense — we knew that Outlander wanted to keep Duncan Lacroix in the family for however long that they could and molding these stories together allows there to be an almost-instant investment in what’s going on when the character resurfaces. The show right now has a mystery that the book series never had — wondering when Murtagh is going to turn back up! It’s likely he will turn up at some point this coming season but it’s hard to know precisely when or how.

We certainly don’t imagine that Duncan Innes is going to be the only book character to potentially disappear, provided that he does, from the television show. There could be others that are combined in the future or folded into ones that already exist. (Probably one of the most notable examples of this from other shows is how it seems Game of Thrones is using Arya in part as a replacement for Lady Stoneheart.) There’s just only so much time for Outlander in thirteen episodes; it’s a little bit easier to bring in new characters to a book than it is a television series with limited real estate.
