The Amazing Race 30 finale: Who won, and how did it happen?

Amazing Race 30 finale

The Amazing Race 30 finale aired on CBS Wednesday night, and from top to bottom this may have been the best overall finale we’ve seen. You had comebacks, surprises, and clear reminders that single decisions can make or break teams.

Let’s start things off here by discussing the exit of Alex & Conor during what was a really fantastic final four leg in Hong Kong — we could actually sense that there was going to be some trouble for him almost from the get-go, mostly because they both seemed to be extremely cranky to be doing the leg at night. They switched the Detour, and they seemed to be struggling so much with the final task that Phil Keoghan had to come and rescue them. That’s never a good look. (We did find Alex & Conor pretty entertaining through most of the season — surprisingly so, since we didn’t know all that much about IndyCar drivers going into the season.)

From there, we then moved onward to the final leg of the season set in San Francisco — also a leg set at night, which is pretty unusual for the show. While Henry & Evan won the first leg before despite the Speed Bump, they struggled immediately with communication — it doesn’t matter how smart or strong you are if that ends up holding you back.

Yet, like we said, things can turn on a dime in this race. We saw that with Kristi & Jen and Jessica & Cody swapping out the lead in the first couple of tasks — at about the midway point in the finale #TeamExtreme managed to get the lead, and Henry & Evan also ended up passing Jessica & Cody as they struggled to find a taxi.

The task to end all tasks

At the very end of this leg the playing field almost entirely evened out thanks to a physically and mentally strenuous task in which the teams all had to assemble a giant model plane aboard an aircraft carrier using various stickers from legs of the race. It was partially a roadblock, and given everything that we saw to that point all three teams were gassed.

Here’s the craziest thing about it: At one point, Henry had the right configuration and he didn’t check in on it! He would’ve won but he just didn’t check! Instead, Jessica & Cody did and Jessica & Cody are the winners of this season of The Amazing Race.

Overall

Wasn’t this a great season overall? While not all of the new twists worked, season 30 brought you a great cast and, to go along with that, a competitive finale. Whether you love Jessica & Cody or not, they earned this win by fighting hard and never giving up in the end.
