NBA All-Star Game 2018: Pharrell Williams, NERD perform Halftime Show
Luckily, with Pharrell / NERD here you’ve got an instance of people performing their own music and with that, not having to deal with anywhere near the same sort of issues. They just had to find the right style to deliver to the game. Stylistically, the first thing that proved surprising was seeing Pharrell with bleached hair instead of the Smokey the Bear hat.
The second thing that stood out was that sometimes, amidst all of the background noise it was a little bit hard to hear all of the singing and rapping. Still, we were all about the performance for the spectacle of it all, from the random dancing to the band to the drum section to that one super-creepy part where the mascots were all there breaking it down. At least this felt like the right venue for this sort of performance — it’s not so memorable that it’s worth listening to again in a few hours, but at least it wasn’t a recreation of Fergie.
Also, we do think that Pharrell is 100% better with NERD than he is as a solo artist, at least in terms of him having a little more of an organic groove and showing off the wide array of the different things that he can do.
