NBA All-Star Game 2018: Fergie performs National Anthem

Fergie

Fergie was given the task of performing the National Anthem during the 2018 NBA All-Star Game, and of course we give her some credit first and foremost for even giving this a go! It’s one of the hardest songs for anyone to perform, let alone live and in front of this sort of audience. While the total viewership here is not anywhere on the level of the Super Bowl, it’s absolutely nothing to sneeze at.

The first thing that we noted when it comes to Anthem tonight was just how long it took to get to it. For one reason or another, there was a ton of buildup to the performance from Fergie.

As for Fergie’s overall rendition (you can see it below), let’s just say that it was … polarizing. While she remains a good singer, there are some songs that just don’t require you to do a lot of messing around. Fergie almost tried to turn the Anthem into something in the blues / funk genre and it really didn’t work all that well. The style of it was odd and the Anthem moved a little bit over into unrecognizable territory. It doesn’t make us any less of a Fergie fan, but this just wasn’t the best Anthem performance — it also wasn’t the worst. At least she had the words right and she did a good job singing her rendition. It just wasn’t the right rendition of this song.

If you want to see Fergie on TV moving forward, our suggestion is to check out the second season of The Four when it premieres on Fox at some point presumably in 2019.

One other thing that was notable

The Barenaked Ladies performed the Canadian National Anthem on the show, and for whatever reason some viewers out there were surprised that this was happening — they actually do this all the time, especially since the Toronto Raptors are involved!
