Outlander season 4 character questions: The future of Sophie Skelton’s Brianna

Outlander season 3 episode 5 sneak peek

We are getting near the end of our Outlander season 4 character questions series, but there are a couple of names that are still worth getting to and touching on, and that includes the focus of today’s piece: Brianna. As played fantastically by Sophie Skelton, there are few other characters within the world of this show who bring the same combination of everything that she does: Heart, passion, and a modern-day sensibility and approach to problem-solving. She has a different upbringing than just about everyone else within the cast of main characters, and there is something super-interesting about her spirit that should be explored more.

So how should we end up seeing Brianna’s story play out over the course of some of the remaining episodes? Allow us to offer up a few suggestions now:

1. Getting a chance to hear more about her upbringing – We know a little bit about how Brianna grew up, but we don’t know all that much about some of her tangible connections to her world other than her relationship with Claire. There is something exciting and interesting that could be played around with further there. We already have a feeling that both Jamie and Claire were significant influences on her day-to-day life, but what about everyone else?

2. Her going back through time – This feels very much like a given that you would want to see what her life would be like in the past alongside Claire and Jamie. The meeting between Brianna and Jamie in the flesh has the potential to be one of the most exciting moments of the entire season — while we are absolutely confident that there would be struggles, of course you want to see Bree make it to the other side of them in one piece.

Also, you have to wonder just what elements of the present she will bring to the past, and in turn how she will use them to her advantage. Given that Jamie and Claire are in America, Bree is in an interesting spot in that she probably knows and understands more about American history during this time than either one of them. After all, she was schooled in it unlike Claire; certainly she learned quite a bit during her education overseas, but history is always a little more geared to the country in which you are educated at.

3. More of Bree and Roger – They are one of the show’s most-interesting pairings and we want some of their humor and spirit to be shown off more in season 4. We know that there are going to be some opportunities for this to happen; in some ways, the end of season 2 and the first five episodes of season 3 were mere stepping stones for everything that is coming up.

4. Having her own opportunity in which to be the hero – In the event that Bree does make it back to the past, we’re sure that there are going to be moments in which she feels helpless and needs the support of someone else. That’s understandable, and in many ways it’s human when you consider everything that she’s been through. Yet,, you do also want to see if there are opportunities for her to find her bearings and fight back at whatever problems eventually find her way. You want a healthy mixture of people helping her and then also her helping herself.

Overall

Given that Skelton has done a tremendous job in the Brianna role to date, it almost goes without saying that we do want to see her with some of the best material possible within season 4. There is every reason in the world to think that Outlander and its writers will deliver.
