If Criminal Minds season 14 renewal happens, should it move to Sundays?
As it is right now, Criminal Minds is probably faring well enough to be renewed for another season. Yet, has it reached its full potential on Wednesday nights? Probably. Its numbers are down year to year there and sometimes, mixing things up can be good for a show in order to find it a new audience. While we wonder just how much more the series has left in the tank, a year or so spent somewhere else could actually do the show some wonders in terms of its long-term viability.
Now when it comes to precisely why CBS would want the series on Sundays, there’s also a pretty simple reason for that: Capitalizing so much more on the moles in the market that are there. During the fall, the majority of the network lineup is benefiting heavily from NFL lead-ins and 60 Minutes. You want shows that skew older, and also appeal to both male and female fans. Criminal Minds does that. It’s an established name that would carry over the audience well from NCIS: Los Angeles.
If we were to become a network scheduler, how we would program the upcoming lineup — we’d air NCIS: Los Angeles at 8:00 followed then by Criminal Minds and then Madam Secretary. The experiment that was Wisdom of the Crowd did not work and we actually think that CBS is better off playing it safe on Sundays. With all of the various preemptions and schedule changes that happen on Sundays, it’s a smarter move for them to just program something on the night that already has an established audience and save some of the new shows for during a week. You need that consistency in order to launch a new show.
Do we think that Criminal Minds will average better numbers on a Sunday? It’s hard to have that much confidence given the unpredictability of the night, but the expectations would probably be such that the network would be happy with whatever it received. Consider this just food for thought while we await a renewal decision in the weeks ahead.
