Why has Blue Bloods season 8 held back on Jamie and Eddie?
The photo above comes from an episode of the series that aired during season 7, and it was one of the few moments where we really started to think that the story for these two characters was about to accelerate. They considered a romantic relationship for a while and then didn’t move forward with it, realizing that they were better off not jeopardizing the relationship that they had as partners.
As noted in the past, it’s understandable that Blue Bloods is trying to stay reasonably realistic in having partners working together who are also not involved with each other. Yet, consider this: It’s not exactly like the concept of partners secretly dating is altogether unheard of. Jamie is often presented as the perfect Boy Scout cop, but it doesn’t hurt to get the guy a little bit rough around the edges here and there.
The larger issue that Blue Bloods is facing with Jamie and Eddie is the half-measure of it all. If there wasn’t that moment last season and the tease that something more could be coming, it would be more of an equilibrium. Instead, it feels a little bit more like the writers gave you something and then took it away. The Jamie / Eddie romance just hasn’t been around for most of this season; heck, there are full episodes at this point where Estes and Vanessa Ray are not around.
If Blue Bloods wants to satisfy some of their fans, they need to establish some sort of resolution here one way or another. We know that patience is already running thin when it comes to Jamie and Eddie, and the longer the wait goes, the more likely it is that some of the excitement will come to a complete halt. Right now the door is half-open; it needs to either be opened or shut.
