Why Wynonna Earp season 3 should keep Friday-night timeslot

Wynonna Earp season 3

There are very few occasions in covering TV news where we advocate for a show to keep a timeslot Friday nights at 10:00 p.m. Eastern — by and large, that’s a terrible time to air TV. It’s just not for a show like Wynonna Earp.

So why does this spot work for this show when it doesn’t for many others? There are a few different reasons for it. With that, there are a few reasons why Syfy really needs to avoid anything that would convince them to move this series to a different spot in the schedule.

1. It’s familiar at this point – If you’ve got a show with a devoted audience like this, you want consistency. Viewers are already used to checking out Wynonna Earp on Friday nights. Moving it around could just cause confusion and cause you to have to emphasize that in all of your promotion. Personally, we’d like the campaign to be a little bit more about the awesome stuff that Wynonna Earp is bringing to the table story-wise.

2. Less competition – Obviously, every Earper out there would choose watching Wynonna Earp live over anything else on the air — but what about the quieter casual fans? There’s an audience for every show out there that you don’t hear from on social media, and these are the channel-surfers and those who choose to casually watch shows and don’t necessarily catch them every week. There is an advantage to Wynonna Earp airing in this timeslot in that it doesn’t have to worry about there being a lot of other viewing options out there for people.

3. Building a community – The spot Wynonna Earp has is a little bit similar to Doctor Who in that it’s a time that can really be carved out as the show’s own. It’s a time of the week that brings everyone together — it’s Friday night, and with that there can be more meetups and watch parties. Moving the show into the work week could discourage some of that community-building.

We know that there may be temptations to move Wynonna Earp to another timeslot thinking that it could perform better, but when you’ve got the show earning renewals on Friday nights and trending worldwide on Twitter, why mess with a good thing?
