Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen episode 11: Battle of the bears
Tonight, Bruce Kalman, Brother Luck, and Joseph Flamm all found themselves doing a challenge that was based entirely around porridge — hey, who doesn’t love the show leaning into the Goldilocks and the Three Bears thing? What we like about the challenge beyond the bear puns is that this is really a clean slate — there are so many different dishes that can be made under this umbrella. They can be sweet or savory; basically, it’s just about making the tastiest bowl of food possible. You’re throwing all sorts of good stuff into a small space and hoping for the best.
Here was what made things interesting — we had no idea during the preparation the two who were going to be advancing to the final round. All three guys made tasty-looking food, and they were all so different from each other it was hard to proclaim that one person was really better than the next. Our prediction by the end of the cooking period was that Bruce made the best dish of the three, mostly because we were shown that Brother made a questioning choice with a blowtorch while Joe’s barley didn’t seem to be done. Of the three, we’ll say that Brother had the most visually appealing of the three — but that doesn’t necessarily mean that his was the best. We’re not tasting! (With that said, we wish that we were.)

The verdict
Tom Colicchio liked all three, but only two of them could advance to the final round. Brother got the nod first. Meanwhile, Joe got the second. Bruce was gone, and that has to be rough because he made it so close to the end of the show.
We’ll be back soon with our take on the final episode of Last Chance Kitchen.
