Celebrity Big Brother ratings off to solid start; yet, it’s hard to expect more

Celebrity Big Brother ratings

The first batch of Celebrity Big Brother ratings have come in over at CBS, and one thing feels very much clear: Viewers seem to be just as interested in the show now as they were when it aired during the summer.

Wednesday night’s premiere episode ended up generating overall a solid 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic on Wednesday night, which makes us feel at least reasonably confident that it will be able to keep up some momentum during the Olympics. Yet, we anticipate ratings of around 1.4 being the norm — the Winter Games will be huge competition and with how aggressively CBS is programming this show (they really have to, all things considered), there will be viewers who drop off just because they can’t keep up with it.

The big roadblock that stands in the way of Celebrity Big Brother being a success story is that, no matter how it fares, there is very little chance of it coming back for another season anytime soon. The only reason it seems to have happened this time is because of its status as Olympics counter-programming. The only way to have that happen again would be for CBS to take some other shows off the air for it for a number of weeks, and we’re not altogether sure that this is something that they will want to do. Or, they could theoretically make the season longer and air it less during the week, but it’s hard to see too many celebrities willing to do that. The only reason why it probably worked out here is because you’re only taking a month, give or take, out of some of these celebrities’ lives.

We will continue to track most of the Celebrity Big Brother ratings this season, largely because it is such a point of curiosity for us to see how a show like this can fare against the Olympic Games. Of course, this goes along with some of our other coverage including live-feed updates and also episode reviews.
