Outlander season 4 and the latest behind-the-scenes tease

Watch the Outlander season 3 premiere

Happy Super Bowl Sunday, Outlander fans! Does anyone else wonder if Claire has a favorite NFL team in the series? Given that the New England Patriots were in existence at the time in which she was in Boston before heading back through the stones, we shudder to think of the idea of her as a Patriots fan. (We say this as someone rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles for the first time virtually ever today.)

Because of the big game and all of the other coverage that we’ve got planned at CarterMatt today, we’re taking the week off from our weekly Outlander character questions piece — rest assured that this will return next week, and with that will come opportunities to discuss Jamie and a couple of other characters we have not quite gotten to just yet. (We’re starting to run out of characters to spotlight but we aren’t quite there just yet.)

Today, we just wanted to share briefly a lovely new photo of some of the kitchenware that has been designed specifically for the series. This was shared in a photo on Twitter by production designer Jon Gary Steele, though it is not specific as to who these bowls and plates belong to or where they are located within the story. Our feeling, based on the aesthetic alone, is that they are clearly meant for North Carolina … we’ll just have to wait and see where, whether it be Fraser’s Ridge or somewhere else. What’s most remarkable about them to us is the sheer attention to detail and the amount of time that had to be spent in crafting every single one of these.

This is why we appreciate getting these little behind-the-scenes teases — we do think that when we watch the show, sometimes we do lose sight of the little things just because of everything that is going on. We are hit with so much sensory overload all at once that, as a result of that, things from the sets to the camera-work to the writing and directing don’t get the fair treatment that they deserve. As production continues, let’s continue to hold some gratitude for all of the crew members working tirelessly, especially those who are dealing with the cold in Scotland at the moment. We do think Sam Heughan summed up the experience perfectly on social media recently:

We imagine that this is far from the last Outlander behind-the-scenes tease that we are going to get for the fourth season; with that, let’s eagerly anticipate more. (Obviously we are aware that there were some others shared on social media the past few days, but we don’t like to share them unless they come from an official channel, i.e. someone working on the series.)
