Saturday Night Live music: Dua Lipa performs ‘Homesick,’ ‘New Rules’

Dua Lipa

The music from tonight’s Saturday Night Live is coming to you courtesy of Dua Lipa, which is someone who we admittedly do not know all that much about. Yet, that’s not a slam on her: We’ve become so out of touch with music the past few years that a good 25% of musical guests on the show these days are complete strangers to us.

What we did know when Dua Lipa started to sing her first song tonight was that she was singing one of her biggest hits in “New Rules.” This is a song that first debuted in the summer of 2017, and to call this a hit would be a gross understatement. This is a song that has been viewed more than a billion times on YouTube across its different videos.

How was this performance tonight? It was definitely high-energy and Dua Lipa was at the center of the stage for all of it. As someone who hadn’t seen her perform on TV before, the first thing we’ll praise her for is having her voice clearly audible. That seems like a simple ask, but it’s not. The staging was simple, which was probably good given that this was her first solo performance on this show. When you are new to SNL, you almost want to treat your first performance as an introduction. It’s crazy to think given her popularity online, but we’re sure that there are plenty of older viewers like us who had never heard of Dua Lipa before the show tonight.

Second song

This was “Homesick,” another song from last summer that is a big, powerful ballad. Personally, this was our favorite of the two songs tonight. It was reminiscent in some ways of Coldplay’s “Everglow,” and told a story about finding meaning and understanding — basically, we like to think of this as a song about healing.
