How Shadowhunters season 3 can be a new beginning

When Shadowhunters season 3 begins, there could be a (temporary) feeling among some of the characters that they get to start all over. Let’s frame it in this way: They think that Sebastian/Jonathan is gone, that Valentine has also departed, and tensions between the Downworlders and Shadowhunters may not be as rocky as they have been in the past.

Is there, as a result of this, a genuine opportunity for some of these characters to sit back, relax, and actually start all over? It’s an interesting concept, and for a time it looks as though it could be explored. This is what series star Katherine McNamara teased on that subject in a new piece over at Covateur:

“The show is really settled into itself now, and all of the elements are gelled together, and these characters have developed to a point now where you can explore new sides of the relationships, especially seeing how season two ended with Valentine being killed and everything kind of coming to a close … It almost gives them a clean slate and a fresh start at finding whatever the new obstacles are going to be, and seeing how the fallout of the finale affects all of the characters going forward.”

How long will this fresh start last?

Probably not that long, given that the arrival of Lilith is going to be coming before too long and with that likely comes a lot of danger. Her connections to Jonathan cause her to be a significant blast from the past and all signs point towards her being intent on stirring up trouble virtually in every single way that she possibly can. Be prepared to see her seek vengeance and pinpointing specific character weaknesses before finding a way to exploit them. She’ll be methodical, smart, and above all dangerous — which is really the exact thing that you want from a villain on a show like Shadowhunters

One of the other reasons why McNamara may be teasing a “fresh start” is because the Clary / Jace relationship is really still at the beginning and there is a chance for the two of them to actually build up into something that is so much greater than either one of them could be on their own.

Where are we in production?

At present, Shadowhunters season 3 is in the second half of the season, with the first half premiering in March. We’re still a good ways away from that, so rest assured there will be more updates coming your way.

We will say this when it comes to another Shadowhunters pairing in Malec: They don’t really need a new beginning given that they are already coming into season 3 strong and established.
