Call the Midwife will (eventually) have an end date, says writer

Call the Midwife end date

As much as we may enjoy Call the Midwife on BBC One, it does appear that the series is going to come to a close. Of course, that’s a given in some ways (all shows must end), but this is one of the first times in which we’ve actually heard some of the powers-that-be behind the scenes start to look more towards the dropping of the final curtain.

Speaking in a new interview with the Radio Times while at a recent covers party, writer Heidi Thomas made it clear why she continues to enjoy the show, how much she cherishes the show’s fans, and also why she’s glad to see a changing perception towards the series. After all, in the early days the show was more dismissed as lighter fare not meant to be taken seriously. That has changed slowly over time.

Of course, the part of this video that is going to garner the most attention is the part in which she discusses the future of the series. She reminded everyone of the number of seasons that are currently confirmed beyond the one airing at present:

“We definitely know we’re making series 8 and series 9. That may be the last. It’s up to [our audience and the BBC] … Nothing lasts for it.”

If we had it our way, we would probably say that Call the Midwife should continue to go strong until we get around to season 10. At that point, the series will have reached a significant milestone. Also, we don’t know just how many stories in this era there will be left to tell. We don’t want to see the series become too contemporary; yet, we also do want to still see some of these characters for a little while going.

Also, we’d love for a Call the Midwife season 10 to be a reunion tour for some of the cast members who have come and gone over the years. Give us Jessica Raine, Emerald Fennell, Miranda Hart, and some of the other notable cast members who have exited the series over time.
