Criminal Minds cliffhanger makes Prentiss’ future uncertain

Criminal Minds season 13 premiereIs Paget Brewster leaving Criminal Minds once more? We’ve seen the actress depart the series in the past, and it’s a question that Wednesday’s episode rose again.

At the conclusion to the episode Wednesday night, we saw the Emily Prentiss character suspended indefinitely in the wake of the latest investigation into her and the BAU. This suggests very bad news for the character’s future, given that Linda Barnes has shown that she’s not someone who likes to be trifled with and she’s clearly gotten enough information that she needs to take some action.

As for Brewster’s own future on the series, we have a hard time imagining that this is it. Prentiss is a fighter, and we don’t think that either her or her BAU colleagues are going to accept this fate for long. They’ve got an opportunity to try and battle against it.

Our hope is pretty clear — that this storyline is actually going to be similar to Reid’s from last year, where it seemed like all hope was lost for the character before he eventually was able to work his way out of the situation, with a lot of help. We know that Prentiss will have allies, but the hard thing about the aftermath of this story is having to wait so long in order to see what’s coming next.

For those wanting a brief reminder of Brewster’s history with the CBS series, she first joined Criminal Minds full-time in season 2 and stayed up until season 7. After departing at that point she went on to do some other projects, while making small guest appearances here and there. She returned to the series back in season 12, and was eventually promoted to regular and then unit chief on the show after the departure of Thomas Gibson. We certainly hope that this is more than just a gig that lasted for a solid year and a half.

Fingers crossed that we get a chance to see a whole lot more of Prentiss in the future. Hopefully, we’ll know more at some point before the series returns.
