Happy! season 2 renewal official at Syfy; Chris Meloni fans, rejoice!
In a statement, Chris McCumber, the President, Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, had the following to say:
“Happy! struck a chord with our SYFY audience and disrupted the TV landscape with its unique storytelling and outrageous performances led by Christopher Meloni … If people thought this season was crazy – I can’t wait for fans to see what Grant Morrison, Brian Taylor and the entire cast and crew have in store for Sax and Happy!”
It’s not all that often that you see an executive really hyping up the crazy of their show quite like this … but there are also very few shows quite like Happy!. Think about the series in this way — it could have easily tanked and drawn negative reviews from critics across the board. This was a high-risk, high-reward idea to pair Meloni with a CGI unicorn of all things. It also requires a certainly kind of viewer who both has a dark sense of humor and can open their mind to this concept. The ratings have been solid — it lost a big chunk of its premiere viewership in week 2, but that’s probably just due to the polarizing presence. The important thing is that the people who got on board the series past the initial premise stayed on board, and on the other side of that we had a genuinely entertaining end product.
The finale for the first season of Happy! airs on Syfy later this week — the great thing about the timing of this announcement is that now, everyone can watch that finale knowing for certain that the show isn’t going anywhere. Doesn’t that help to take a little bit of the edge off?
