Vikings season 5: Series boss on Clive Standen’s return, Rollo’s future

Vikings

The great news entering the second half of Vikings season 5 is fairly simple: Rollo is back! The beloved character made his triumphant return in the closing minutes of the midseason finale, and that sets the stage potentially for some epic Rollo story moving into the second half of the season.

Now, what the finale didn’t exactly set up was just how the story for Rollo moving forward would play out. We know that the availability of Clive Standen may have been somewhat limited due to Taken, but they probably made the most of getting Rollo back in whatever way they possibly could. He has obviously connections to Lagertha and other characters, but he has his own loyalties. He’s been off-screen and away from so many other people for so long that it doesn’t seem 100% fair to speculate as to just what some of his intentions are now.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight about some of these questions, series executive producer Michael Hirst passed along the follow message regarding getting the character and how he could be coming back, in part, to tie together some loose ends:

“Like any other fan, I was thrilled to see Rollo sailing into the show, but he’s come back to deal with things which were never dealt with in the past. And we’re going back to season one here, where there were huge questions about his relationship, and Ragnar’s relationship with Lagertha, and what had actually happened between them all — and frankly, whose son Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) was. So Rollo is sailing back to deal with things that have been on his mind for a long time, and it’s pretty powerful stuff, I must say.”

No matter how long Rollo sticks around for one thing feels clear: He’s going to leave his mark on the show and everyone he comes into contact with. Some of his scenes with Lagertha could be especially interesting since we’re talking about someone in her who is coming off of tremendous trauma in the wake of Astrid’s death.
