Vikings season 5: Is Clive Standen back as Rollo?

Clive Standen returning

Just in case the Vikings season 5 midseason finale didn’t give you enough drama in between all the character deaths, they also answered another important question: Is Clive Standen returning as Rollo?

Judging from the closing minute of the episode, it does appear as though the answer to that question is a very clear YES. The beloved character, who has been MIA for a rather long time, was seen sailing somewhere — and for us we suspect that the somewhere he’s sailing to is Kattegat. His nephews are in a battle and fighting against each other, but he also has a very complicated history with Lagertha as well. It makes sense that he would show up to see what’s really going on.

What is important here is that Standen found the time in between his appearances on Taken to do a little bit more with the History series that really brought him into the spotlight. Because of his other gig, it’s probably unfair to think that we’re going to be seeing Standen for an extended period of time. However, a little bit of Standen is better than none of him at all. Given that his character does have some responsibilities elsewhere, the present arrangement does work out in a way that makes a good bit of sense. We do think there’s also a little bit of leeway in terms of what Michael Hirst can choose to do with the character.

We know that Standen is credited with at least one episode coming up on the second half of Vikings season 5, but there could be so much more than that in the end. After all, one of the biggest things to remember with listings like that is that they often don’t tell the full picture because of spoilers. Just be happy Rollo is back and rejoice in all of his awesomeness for however long he’s around.

For now, isn’t his return one of the best Vikings-related cliffhangers that you could’ve ever hoped for?
