Is Josefin Asplund leaving Vikings as Astrid? What happened?

Vikings season 6 renewal

Is Josefin Asplund leaving Vikings? Is Astrid gone forever? That is a good question worth asking based on what we ended up seeing on the show tonight.

We’ll admit that we found ourselves asking the “is Astrid really dead?” question ourselves based on what we ended up seeing tonight, mostly because we did flutter through what could have been possible visions. Yet, in the case of Astrid it did make sense for her to be gone, and for her to be effectively put out of her misery as a reason for it happening. Lagertha was just trying to do what she thought was best for her — Astrid had been raped, married to a man who had ultimately taken her prisoner and was pregnant. Lagertha simply loved her so much that she didn’t want any of this suffering to continue for her.

Still, this has to be one of the most devastating character deaths in a season that, so far, has been full of them. Lagertha loves Astrid enough to help to end her life. It’s something that many fans of the two are going to remember and probably cry over. The fact that they couldn’t continue their relationship is an indictment on their era, and a particularly sad one to go along with that.

If you did enjoy watching the Astrid character because of Asplund’s work, rest assured that she already has another upcoming project in the works entitled Conspiracy of Silence. Like many other Vikings performers, she’s not going to have a difficult time finding work after this. We also feel like Lagertha fans everywhere will immortalize her in some shape or form. She appeared in almost twenty episodes of the series, and that is more than enough to establish her very much in show lore.

Overall, this is just a bloody show where characters die. The end of Astrid is just another part of that.
