The Assassination of Gianni Versace episode 3: Lee Miglin’s murder
This episode is entitled “A Random Killing,” and the attached synopsis does its part to feed into that to a certain extent:
Chicago real estate tycoon Lee Miglin is murdered in what police describe as a random killing. Written by Tom Rob Smith; Directed by Gwyneth Horder-Payton.
Of course, if this was really a random killing, why in the world would the show be promoting it in the way in which they are? Here’s the thing: In history, Miglin was killed by Cunanan as a part of his spree. Obviously, this show is going to be doing what they can in order to present the entire journey of Cunanan from where he was at the start to how he ended up murdering Gianni Versace — that’s an ambitious goal, mostly because this is not a person too many people are altogether familiar with. Yet, we do have faith in the writers and we have a lot of faith in the performance of Darren Criss. This show is absolutely going to need him in order to sell what is ultimately a very psychological journey.
We know that, at least so far, viewers are here to check out the journey. The DVR ratings for the first episode are in and they were pretty strong — if they stay that way, there’s a pretty good chance that we’re going to be seeing plenty of other American Crime Story installments coming up in the future. We already know that at least one other one has been ordered.
What do you think about The Assassination of Gianni Versace episode 3 focusing on what happened with Lee Miglin — in turn, do you think that the show is doing the right thing in focusing so much on all of these different victims of Cunanan?
