SAG Awards 2018: Morgan Freeman receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Morgan Freeman is going to be at the center of the SAG Awards 2018 tonight, and there is a very good reason for it: The Lifetime Achievement Award.

It didn’t take a whole lot of foresight to know that this was going to be a tremendous moment on the night. After all, Morgan Freeman is one of the most legendary actors of all time and his work spans decades. He’s also an inspirational figure, a thinker, and a guy constantly looking for ways to bring the medium forward.

We knew that this moment was going to be special the moment that Rita Morena first came out in order to introduce Freeman and talk about her love for him. (She also milked the applause in a really funny way.) It was especially fun given that Freeman previously presented the award to her five years beforehand. She gave a nice little speech, and then following that we got a nice little highlight reel of some of Freeman’s accomplishments over the years. It’s a highlight reel to end all highlight reels, and it gave you a good sense of everything that Freeman has done over the years from comedy to drama to even The Electric Company.

The thing that surprised us the most about this speech, though, was how short it was. While it was certainly fine enough, we imagined going into the night that this would be one of the biggest talking points of the entire show. Probably the most notable moment of the whole show came via watching Freeman struggle to left the award at the end … which is another reminder that the SAG Awards are super-heavy. That’s something that has been a runner throughout the years. These awards are apparently significantly heavier than they appear to be while watching at home.
