Will The Resident join The Good Doctor, Grey’s Anatomy, Chicago Med as a medical TV sensational

Resident premiere date

The hospital drama is starting to feel like one of the more saturated ones on television. Remember that it wasn’t all that long ago when we really just had Grey’s Anatomy dominating primetime. Now, we’ve got Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Doctorand Chicago Med all on during the season, with Code Black coming in a matter of months.

Now, Fox is getting ready to issue its own challenger in the drama in The Residenta smart, character-focused medical drama that features a great cast (including Matt Czuchry of The Good Wife and Emily VanCamp of Revenge and Everwood) coupled with a story all about tough decisions and knowing what to do in a given situation. This is a show that Fox is investing a lot into — they are premiering it Sunday following the NFC Championship Game, which is going to allow it to get off to a great ratings start.

The struggle that The Resident has is mostly from a marketing standpoint. When you think about many of the other dramas out there in this genre, the vast majority of them have some sort of central gimmick that they are able to use in order to rope in viewers to watch. When it comes to Chicago Med, for example, it is the show being a part of the same universe as Chicago PD and Chicago Fire. Meanwhile, when it comes to The Good Doctor much of the marketing centered around Freddie Highmore’s character of Dr. Shaun Murphy. That was a series that was able to utilize his name value and his character’s uniqueness for the sake of generating a lot of attention.

Superficially, The Resident doesn’t have that same gimmick. It’s relying a little bit more on hardcore TV fan sentiment to convince viewers to watch — if they do they will find a lot here that they will enjoy, but getting their foot in the door and then keeping it there is the challenge. This is why Fox seems to be giving the series the debut timeslot that they are. This allows them the opportunity to premiere the show at a time where they can convince most of the audience to watch once and, by association, continue to watch pushing forward into the future. We’ll see how the pattern holds as time goes on this season.

Check out the latest trailer for The Resident below. Remember that the series will begin not long after the NFC Championship Game is over.
